New tools for nuclear safeguards with molecular signatures inherent to uranium particles

Share:

The SEM-SCA, which combines scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy with structural and chemical analyser, allows a Raman spectrum to be recorded directly in the SEM chamber. Results of this study contribute to the on-going investigations on suitable signatures inherent to uranium particles for nuclear safeguards & security, also in view the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) central role in verifying the 'Geneva' safeguards agreement with Iran.

The analysis of uranium particles has become an important tool for the detection of non-declared nuclear activities and in nuclear forensics. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is currently evaluating emerging technologies and instrumentations that may show promise for improving safeguards accuracy, effectiveness and efficiency. The work of the JRC scientists in this field provides potential new alternatives and contributes to the IAEAs's evaluation on emerging technologies.
