Varian, Inc. Names Garry W. Rogerson as President and Chief Operating Officer

The Board of Directors of Varian, Inc. (Nasdaq:VARI) has named Garry W. Rogerson, 50, to the newly created position of President and Chief Operating Officer, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company's Scientific Instruments, Vacuum Technologies, and Electronics Manufacturing segments worldwide. Previously, Rogerson was Senior Vice President of Varian, Inc.'s Scientific Instruments segment, his most recent assignment in a 20-plus-year career with the company.

At the same time, the Board elected Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer G. Edward McClammy, 53, to the position of Senior Vice President. Franco M. Palomba, 40, Controller, was also made a Vice President.

"Over the last three years, Varian, Inc. has grown substantially through acquisition and new product development targeted at the life sciences," said Allen J. Lauer, Chairman of the Board and CEO, "and much of this drive has been led by Garry in his Scientific Instruments' roles.

"Garry's proven leadership and vision will now be applied across the entire company as we leverage product and technical synergies, streamline processes, and use the unique capabilities of the company and its people to provide new solutions for customers and solid, sustainable growth for our investors."

McClammy was named Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Varian, Inc. in April 1999. Prior to that he had more than 20 years of corporate financial management experience, most recently with Quantum, where he served as vice president, treasurer, and in various finance management roles.

Palomba became the Controller of Varian, Inc. in 2001. He has served in increasingly responsible finance positions during his 14 years with the company. Prior to being named Controller, Palomba served as Treasurer.
